New President's Message

Dear Loyal Members and Supporters,

Firstly, a belated Happy New Year! Time flies! I sit here in 2018 writing this message, not quite believing how quickly 2017 went.

I’d like to introduce myself as your new President, for which I am greatly humbled and honoured. Some of you may already know me, and that I have taken on the honourable role as President from the fantastic Laura Smith, others may not, however, I hope to get to know you all over the coming weeks and months at the various society events.

I have been an expat for six years now with a stint in Hong Kong, prior to arriving in Bangkok. Originally from North Manchester, my family relocated to a sleepy seaside town as a child (think Jolly Fisherman and Butlins!) until I left the nest at 18 and went back to University in Manchester. I then mostly worked in London, with a brief stint in Leeds, before leaving England for pastures new. I work in financial services and am a keen (sometimes decent) golfer and a big Manchester United fan. Other than that, like many of you, whilst Bangkok may be my ‘home’, England will always have a place in my heart. Nothing beats a long summers night when it’s light at 10pm or a white Christmas.

I would first like to say a huge ‘thank you’ on behalf of the Society to Laura Smith who has stepped down as President and has done a fantastic job. Martin Smith will also be stepping down as Treasurer and, I’m sure you’ll agree, he did a wonderful job too. True to their passion for England, and kind nature, you’ll be pleased to know that they are both staying on as Committee members. It comforts me to know (as much as you I am sure!), since Laura will be such a tough act to follow,  I’ll have her wits (and ideas) with me at all times.

We are fortunate yet again in having another wonderful Committee for 2018, many of whom have done a huge amount over the years to support the Society. We are incredibly lucky in having two Vice Presidents again this year - John Hocking and Gale Bailey MBE.  Also remaining on the Committee are: Carole Ann Eastgate, Ray Bloom, Ghaff Khan, Liz Khan and Kevin Hellon. We welcome the following new Committee members: Steve Harrop (Treasurer), Chris Watson (Golf) and Mathieu Bellic (general member).  Between us there is a wealth of experience and expertise in many different fields and I am eternally grateful to everyone for volunteering their services to support Bangkok's ‘English’ Society.

SAVE THE DATE

ST. GEORGE'S 56th ANNUAL BALLon SATURDAY MAY 19th  2018 at the ROYAL ORCHID SHERATON HOTEL.

All the best,

For England, the Queen and St. George!

Hasan Khan

PRESIDENT – THE BANGKOK ST. GEORGE’S SOCIETY
