The Pattaya Shelter Project
The Bangkok St. George’s Society has recently made a donation from our 2015 Annual Ball funds to the Pattaya Shelter project - please see a little of their background below. We are hoping to support this project further with proceeds from our 2016 Ball. The Pattaya Shelter Centre project was set up in 2014 in order to house street kids, homeless adults (both Thai and foreigners) and children suffering from abuse. It is headed by Miss Sunanta Kaewmuangpetch (Nong).
Background:
Following the rapid expansion of Pattaya and the increase in prostitution and abused women, the number of homeless and sexually abused also children increased. These children often become victims of human trafficking or turn to crime themselves to survive. Khun Nong had previously been working alongside a number of NGOs to deal with issues of human trafficking and street kids and in 2014 decided to set up her own Shelter.
Aims:
Besides providing shelter for the homeless, especially needy children, the Shelter aims to educate children to a basic level and provide some occupational training for adults. A fundamental aim is to provide these children with basic life skills to enable them to integrate and be part of normal society. A further aim is to raise awareness amongst the government and local companies of the problem and strive for their cooperation to helping solve the problems.
This project is currently funded by donations and in order to continue its operations, funds are urgently needed for the Shelter rent, food, electricity, water and educational materials.
They would also like to provide an activities programme for the children.
